WEST KOWLOON CULTURAL DISTRICT (APRIL 2004)
Hong Kong Government invited international proposals for the development of the West Kowloon Cultural District in 2003. Three of the five proposals received were short-listed for public consultation including the World City Culture Park as proposed by Henderson Land for an international arts and cultural hub.
The Henderson Land design includes
- The Cesar Pelli designed Theatre Complex/Hong Kong Opera House – a triple theatre complex with 70m high curved glass walls creating a striking harbour landmark;
- The Kenzo Tange designed Museum Cluster and Art Exhibition Centre characterized by a transparent egg-shaped form and which will include a Museum of Modern Art, a Museum of Ink, a Museum of Design and a Museum of Moving Images together forming one of the largest integrated museum and arts facilities in the world;
- The Performance Venue, designed by HOK Architects, will seat 11,142 people with an elliptical transparent dome-like architectural form providing maximum efficiency for a word-class indoor venue.
Widnell’s Hong Kong office has been appointed to provide cost consultancy and quantity surveying services to the project team which also includes local architects Denis Lau & Ng Chun Man and Meinhardt Consulting Engineers.
